I would appreciate any information with regards to inclusions. My fiance and I both inspected the diamond before I purchased her engagement ring. It has now been about a week and she noticed a significant black spec (EXTREMELY visable to the naked eye). This spec was not there a week ago and as per inclusion map it is a VI2 clarity. Is this common and what could have posibly happened to it? ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Very Best,

Bill

Hi Bill, your question is much more complex then you think.

First of all, you probably mean VS2 or SI2. Now either could have eye-visible inclusions and either may not. It all depends on the type of inclusion, it's size, color, location, etc.

Second of all grading is subjective, even within the same lab. For example, VS1 and VS2. What's a VS1? What's VS2? Is there such a thing as VS1.5? Surely in nature there exists stones that are borderline VS1/VS2 what are they classified as? And when comparing multiple labs, this gets even trickier because one man's SI2 is another's VS2. Color and Clarity grading are nothing more then "opinions" based on comparisons of other diamonds, they are not measured like you would measure carat weight or depth. That's why it's important to trust the lab making the grade, and important to have it verified especially if it's a major purchase. Unfortunately in this industry there are some sellers who would prefer to sell diamonds with fishy grading reports and pray on people's lack of knowledge.

Now getting back to your stone. Can you give us more info? Like what shape and carat weight is it? Who graded it? Are you sure it's not just dirt or something? Have you tried cleaning it? Have you asked the jeweler what it is? And will they guarantee the grading say if you took it to an independent appraiser to have verified?

The bottom line is, it's the jeweler's responsibility to make things right in cases such as these. The lab carries no guarantee. They do not "certify" the accuracy of their grading, it's an opinion only. The guarantee lies on the jeweler. If he is unwilling to take back the stone or stand behind it's grade, I would suggest you get the stone independently appraised, and if the appraiser recommends you may even want to have the diamond unmounted and sent to a lab such as the GIA to have an accurate report done and hopefully pursue some actions against the jeweler assuming he's unwilling to stand behind his diamonds.

Take care,
Yosef

All of the above considered, have you tried washing the Pavilion of the stone, sometimes a small piece of jewelers rouge can move from a crevice on the mounting to the back of the stone and be seen through the table
