How do you tell what a ring size is? my GF has a ring and I have tried looking at the ring to find size, I was told there should be a number somewhere but I can't seem to find it.

hmmm i don't think rings have the size marked anywhere. the only way to measure is with a sizing stick

Well ring size is based on measuring the inside diameter...

For example...

Size 4 = 14.9mm
Size 5 = 15.7mm
Size 6 = 16.5mm
... etc.

If you can measure the inside diameter we could tell you what finger size it is. Keep in mind not all sizes are the same.

Some variations include:

1) Where the diameter is measured. Some rings are measured in the center, some on the leading edge. And with comfort fit, these can vary. Ask the jeweler how they or the manufacturer measures it when it's made.

2) Wider rings will fit more "snug" on the finger since they ride up higher on your finger. So if you're sized a 9 in a 3mm ring, you may want to get 9-1/2 for an 8mm one. Or the best solution is to have them size you on a roughly equivalent mm size ring so you know how it's going to feel.

3) Rolling Rings are measured when the 3 rings mesh properly. But as it rolls it can get tighter when it's not properly meshed, so again if you wear 9 you may want to get a size 9-1/2.

4) Off-Round, a lot of rings are not perfectly round especially when used. Be sure when you measure a used ring you measure it several times in several places. Some are not even designed to be round. So while it may "read" one thing on a finger sizer (the sizing stick), it will fit more loose on a finger since there is more room inside.

When all else fails, be sure to work with a jeweler who will resize or exchange! Ring sizes are not 1 size fits all for every situation unfortunately.

ring size seems to be a complicated matter. I don't want to get it wrong so would it be a good idea to sneak it out and see if a jeweler can give me the specific size?

oh yes the ring is also old should I worry about wear and tear affecting the size?

yes, that is always my biggest problem making sure I get the right size. Many times I want to give a surprise gift, but I worry so much about getting a perfect fit.

undestandable, I'm going to have to sneak this one out and take some time off of work to get this done. I've been wanting to buy a ring for her for a while but have put it off. Hopefully I can find something around my budget and finally pop the question.

Neat sites. I will have to try that and see if my guestimate is accurate.

Do different countries have different sizes?

I have a page on ring size information that may be of interest.

There is also a link to useful online converter where you can put in your regional size and it will translate it.

I like canigirls answer, take her ring into a jeweler and ask him to measure it for you. Done Deal!

How sweet are you!! Just take a little walk with her around the mall or something and look for a jewelry store. Take her inside and have them size her finger. You can make up a simple excuse if you want it to be a surprise.

based on my experience if you want ...if you want to know the size of you gf s ring size (were she didnt know that you want to know) you may ask her friend to ask her size not too being obvious.
