my husband purchased a princess cut 6 stone tension set ring from a well known high street store in the uk. He was told it was an engagement ring, knew I would love it and purchased the ring as such.
He was incidentally right I do love it. However, i have now lost one of the diamonds from the centre of the set of diamonds. Feeling very bad went into the store in another town only to be told by the sales assistant that tension set rings are not meant to be worn every day and that they are meant to be worn as a dress ring, not as engagement ring. She also said that he would have been told this information - HE WAS NOT. If he was why would he have purchased it in the first place. The ring cannot be repaired - so they say.
Questions:
1 - Can tension set rings be worn everyday?
2 - Can they not be repaired?
3 - should tension set rings be sold as engagement rings?

thank you very much in advance for your help, this is obviously very upsetting to me as it as the ring my husband proposed to me with and the ring I wore on my wedding day. i would like to resolve this as soon as possible. thank you again

Do you have a photo of the ring? Who manufactured it? It doesn't sound like a tension set ring to me. Tension set rings typically have one center stone only and this stone is held under compressive forces.

Your ring sounds like invisible set, where there are 6 princess shape diamonds (maybe 3 rows x 2 columns or something?) ... designed to be joined like brickwork and made into what looks like one diamond. They're all cut in a way to be interlocking and they do have to be set in a way to keep "tension" or compressive forces by channel setting on the diamonds to keep them from becoming loosened.

I'd find out if this ring is really tension or invisible set, please provide a photo if possible. I've attached a photo of invisible setting so you can understand what it is. The photo below has the side stones are channel set, the "center stone" of the engagement ring is a 3x3 cluster of princess diamonds that are invisible set and then prong set to be held. If one of the prongs becomes loosened here for example, you lose the compression holding all the 9 princesses together and then it can fall apart.
