Question about GIA certified

I am in the market to purchase an engagement ring I found a ring my girlfriend really likes at a whoesale jewelry store that is not certified. It is a VS1 G grade round diamond 1ct. Is GIA certification a must? or am I crazy to think about buying a non certified diamond.

For a 1ct VS1/G, I think a grading report from a reputable lab is a must. AGS and GIA are both very reputable.

I'm regularly criticized for this, but uno mas, why/how do you think that a store who is retailing to you is a wholesaler? Or am I mistaken and you own and operate a jewelry store?
