tips buying loose diamond

We want to replace my 1/2 c. round diamond in my engagement ring for a larger 1.5 c., but need to know the right questions to ask. The info on home page is very helpful, but what should my husband ask about the cut? Does he need to take my ring with him when looking? We know nothing about buying loose diamonds and want to get a good value.

If you want the very best cut diamond (round or princess) I would suggest you ask your jeweler for an AGS graded "Ideal" cut. GIA Excellent is also a very well cut diamond. "Very Good" is also a good cut grade, I wouldn't go with anything less then that. I can go into more detail if you like other then that, but that's generally an easy way to be assured of getting a good deal on a diamond.
