I am completely new to buying jewelry of any kind. I am trying to learn all I can so I can purchase an engagement ring I can be proud to give the most awesome girl ever. I love the look of tension set rings. I read on Steven Kretchmer that resizing tension set rings is very limited. What happens I my wife (to be) ever needs the ring resized. I like the simple look of Gelin Abaci's style# TR-006. Are there better makers of similar style rings? If I understand correctly the karat of the diamond refers to the diamonds weight or more practicable to me, the size. What size diamond looks best on ring of the style I mentioned? I priced the ring with a .7 karat D IF diamond with a “perfect” cut would be about $5000. Is that high. Would a diamond of this size look best on a ring of this style? That is the price range I am looking at. Help me out, I’m a complete novice.

Hi,
A D/IF stone is of course very rare, but really not needed. If you want top white, eye clean, VS1+ clarity, F+ color will be fine. To answer your question regarding tension set resizing, yes they are difficult to resize (even by the manufacturer), but most manufacturers do resize their rings, some at a cost, others free of charge. One of the verified diamond dealers here, DY jewels sells a line of tension rings by Danhov, and they include lifetime free resizing service, I believe you just pay shipping. You may want to contact them first. Best of luck.

Tension set rings cannot effectively be sized. By reason of the inherent properties of any metal with a spring characteristic. It’s the spring property of the metal that literally squeezes against opposing sides of the stone when set by the tension method.

To be perfectly honest, we avoid tension set rings. They can prove to be problematic, regardless of whether they need to be resized. As you can imagine, with the diamond beiong held in place by the tension of the metal each side, to adjust in any way the dynamic of the ring through resizing will have a determinetal affect on the security of the diamond. Therefore, we choose not to sell tension style diamond rings in the first place.

Always remember that if you will present tension set wedding ring then it will make your ring unique and beautiful and surely it will catch the attention of everybody because of its uniqueness. You can make your ring with any metal which you use in your tradition wedding ring. You can make your ring with platinum, white gold, yellow gold and silver. But for this style generally titanium and platinum are used as it gives modernistic look.

Tension set rings are among the most fashionable rings that are available today. The stones that are used to make tension set rings cannot be fragile. Else, they might break under pressure or when the metal expands or contracts due to the change in weather. this is the resion that tension set rings are among the most precious jewellery available today.
